Check the files behind a video link

YouTube Thumbnail Extractor

Paste a video, Shorts, live, or embed link to check all five standard thumbnail sizes. Compare which files are available, find the largest confirmed image, and copy its direct link.

Free to use. No sign-up, extension, or API key.

Checks images without taking a screenshot or changing their resolution.

How to Extract a YouTube Thumbnail in 3 Steps

  1. Copy a video link or its 11-character ID and paste it into the extractor.
  2. Choose Extract thumbnails. Check the result for each size and the largest confirmed preview.
  3. Copy a direct image URL, open the original file, or save one image. For several files at once, use the batch thumbnail downloader.

Every YouTube Thumbnail Size and What It’s For

These are standard dimensions, not a promise that every video has every file. The image check determines which sizes you can use.

Standard thumbnail dimensions, aspect ratios, and practical uses
Tier / filenameDimensionsRatioUse
Max Resolutionmaxresdefault.jpg1280×72016:9Inspect the largest standard HD image, when provided.
SDsddefault.jpg640×4804:3Compare a standard-definition alternative.
HQhqdefault.jpg480×3604:3Use a compact preview when a larger file is unavailable.

Defaultdefault.jpg120×904:3Use a small reference preview; it is not an HD image.

Why Some Thumbnails Won’t Extract

A predictable filename does not guarantee a usable image. Not every video exposes the largest sizes. If Max Resolution is not confirmed, choose the largest size that passed the check; the tool does not manufacture an HD image.

An incorrect ID, removed or inaccessible content, a blocked CDN, or a slow connection can also stop image checks. A failed image request alone cannot tell you whether a video is private or deleted. Check the video link and retry before drawing that conclusion.

Extractor vs Downloader: What’s the Difference?

Both use existing thumbnail files. This page helps you inspect the five standard sizes, compare availability, and copy image URLs. The YouTube Thumbnail Downloader adds available player frames, multi-selection, and ZIP downloads when your goal is to save a batch.

YouTube Thumbnail Extractor FAQ

Can I extract thumbnails from Shorts and live links?

Yes. Paste a Shorts URL or a live video link with an 11-character video ID. The extractor checks the thumbnail files YouTube exposes for that ID; it does not create a new image or change its crop.

Why is the Max Resolution thumbnail not available?

Not every video exposes a Max Resolution image. The extractor checks the returned image dimensions rather than assuming the largest filename exists. If that check fails, use the largest confirmed size. A network restriction can also prevent a check from completing.

Does extracting a thumbnail improve its resolution?

No. Extracting retrieves an existing image file. It does not upscale the image, remove letterboxing, or reconstruct detail that YouTube does not provide.

Do I need an account, extension, or API key?

No. This tool is free, runs in your browser, and needs no sign-up, browser extension, or YouTube API key.

How do I save several thumbnails together?

Use the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader on the home page to select several available images and save them as a ZIP. This extractor focuses on checking the five standard sizes and copying individual image links.

Download and reuse only images you own, have permission to use, or are otherwise legally allowed to use.
